Get Away From the Grind On National Coffee Day

Do you know that today is National Coffee Day? Let's wake up and smell the coffee with a new Staples survey that finds 37% of U.S. employees can't even dress themselves for work without having a cup of the stuff first!

U.S. employees might yearn to get away from the grind, just not the coffee kind. We love our coffee, and in an increasingly 24/7 work culture we can't work without it.

In fact, 44% of the employees Staples surveyed can't have a coherent conversation, or even commute to work, before having a cup of coffee first. Forget about checking email (40%) and eating (38%), too.

Nearly half of employees surveyed drink at least three cups of coffee per day, and if U.S. employees had to choose between social media access or coffee consumption, then 75% of them would give up social media for coffee. Hey, we all have to make sacrifices in this economy.

Bottom line: talk to the hand, unless there's a hot, steaming mug of coffee in it.

From the employer's perspective, who wouldn't offer free coffee (or occasional coffee gift cards) to employees? As a coffee drinker myself, I realize this sounds self serving. But it seems like such an obvious perk, pun intended.

As we celebrate our cup of black gold today, let us not forget the co-workers who will remind us (again) that they don't drink coffee. Never have, never will. Coffee is too dehydrating, they don't need the caffeine, they drink upwards of 50 glasses of water every day, and otherwise pour it on as we stand there, quietly sipping coffee.

My response is that coffee is a liquid too, caffeine keeps me from leaving the house in pajamas, and recent studies have found that coffee contains surprising health benefits. If you'd like to discuss this further, then let's meet at the coffee shop. I'll bring my coffee gift card!

On that note, there are coffee freebies to be had today if you know where to look. So get away from the grind to seek out the deals. You should be able to find them, since you've already had at least three cups of coffee so far.
