That's right, kids. As much as we talk about how forward-looking our workforce is trending in the smartphone age, here comes a survey that says employees everywhere can't quit email and LANDLINE PHONES! A full 35% of employees surveyed said the landline phone is "very important" to getting the job done on a daily basis, compared to 24% who see smartphones as their go-to work tool. Meanwhile, a mere 4% see social media as their main work tool.
Landline phone fever. Catch it!
I know what you're thinking: Employees are still using landline phones at work because their fuddy-duddy employers haven't caught up with the times. It could very well be; the survey doesn't seem to tell us. Landline phones, however, could have a better, clearer connection in a business context, which comes in awfully handy when speaking with a client. Sorry, you dipped there. Would you mind repeating what you just said?
Mainly, I love that the landline phone is still impacting the workplace in a major way, tethering us to our desks in the heady, wireless 21st Century. Aren't we supposed to be using Facebook to do our spreadsheets and biometrics to borrow the receptionist's keyboard by now? To me, this survey is proof that things simply don't change that fast, no matter how hard business journalists try. Your landline phone is ringing. I'll let you go answer it.
